WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration in its final days is shifting more than $100 million in military aid from Israel and Egypt to Lebanon as it tries to bolster a ceasefire agreement it helped mediate between Israel and Hezbollah. In separate notices sent to Congress, the State Department said it was moving $95 million in military assistance intended for Egypt and $7.5 million for Israel toward supporting the Lebanese army and its government. The notices were dated Jan. 3 and obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Israel's military struck buildings near Beirut for the second time, following a deadly airstrike on the densely populated Basta district that killed at least 29 people. Witnesses reported at least eight explosions in the suburbs of Dahieh, where the Israeli military had earlier issued evacuation warnings. Casualty figures from the latest strikes remain unclear. Tensions have soared as Israel and the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia continue exchanging fire. Hezbollah launched 250 rockets into Israel, injuring six people and damaging property in areas including Petach Tikwa. Israeli airstrikes have also intensified in southern Lebanon, particularly near Khiam, while the Lebanese Army reported casualties from an Israeli attack on a military outpost in Tyre. Lebanon's Health Ministry confirmed at least 84 fatalities and 213 injuries across the country in a single day, with devastation centered in urban areas of Beirut and the south. The Lebanese Army, caught in the crossfire, has suffered several casualties despite maintaining neutrality in the conflict. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has called for greater pressure on Israel and Hezbollah to accept a US-brokered ceasefire proposal. He condemned the ongoing destruction, including the leveling of villages in southern Lebanon, urging an end to hostilities.
