  1. What is emotionally focused therapy and how does it help couples?

    Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is a short term, that lasts about 8-20 sessions and has a person-centred approach to it. It maintains that human emotions and experiences closely contribute and can work towards changing problematic emotional states and interpersonal relationships. It can be thought of as a treatment aimed at improving attachment and bonding in adult relationships. It also has its base in attachment theories and neuroscience. Interesting fact - the treatment approach was initially begun to help couples with their relationship, though it is now broadly applied to individuals and families. EFT can help the couples gain better emotional functioning, develop stronger bonds and result in an improved interpersonal understanding. The approach involves a nine-step model of restructuring the attachment bond between the partners - meaning, reshaping the bond that currently exist in the couple by (a.) effectively modifying own actions based on partner's actions; and (b.) being able to turn to your partner for emotional support effectively. The nine-steps are divided into 3 stages - Stabilization/de-escalation phase; Restructuring phase; and Consolidation phase. THE STABALISATION/DE-ESCALATION PHASEThis includes a space for the couple to have open discussion about any hesitations they may have regarding therapy. Here's where the therapist tried to understand the relational conflict arising between the partners and their negative interaction cycle and tries to access emotions underlying each [partner's position in the cycle, while reframing the problems in terms of the cycle, emotions and attachment needs. THE RESTRUCTURING PHASE Here, the therapist works with the couple to essentially restructure and widen their emotional experience, giving them the chance to recognize their needs and then changing interaction based on those needs. As this leads to a change in pattern of interaction, it would further help the couple continue with this new form of interaction that is much more specific and straightforward. This would also help the couple create more events where they can bond. As a result, old patterns of interaction fade away. THE CONSOLIDATION PHASE This final stage usually focuses on the reflection of new emotional experiences and self-concepts, integrating the couple's new way of dealing with problems within themselves and in the relationship. Additionally, a couple may benefit from EFT if they have been dealing with issues such as: addiction, chronic illness, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, infidelity and trauma.
